Young Black Men and Boys: The School to Success Pipeline

OPEN’s aim is to take a look at systemic reviews that can improve the life outcomes of young Black men in Louisiana by focusing on the critical benchmarks of school readiness, proficiency in reading by 3rd grade, proficiency in numeracy by 8th grade, and high school graduation.

School to Success Fast Facts

• At 53%, Louisiana is ranked 43rd in the US in rates of Black male graduation.

• Only 9.3% of young Black boys in Louisiana are proficient in 8th grade reading, and 9.8% are proficient in 8th grade mathematics.

• In the 2012-13 cohort, Louisiana Black males received a 12.9% out-of-school suspension rate.

• Black male students were at the bottom of four-year high school graduation rates in 35 of the 48 states surveyed.
