The One Step Campaign is a seven month long initiative to bridge the gap between education policymaking and community involvement. The central aim of the ONE STEP Campaign is to build a community vision for public education in New Orleans. The Campaign acknowledges that urban school systems and their success has often been tied the continuity (or lack of) Superintendent leadership. Often visions and programs change with shifts in leadership. ONE STEP aims to identify a framework of what the New Orleans community desires for its schools rooted in best practice to which all school and policymakers are ultimately held accountable.
To include everyone in the conversation, OPEN hosts a panel on each topic, featuring presentations and discussion with policymakers at the national, state, and local levels. Every panel event provides the unique opportunity for community members to connect with education professionals, and learn the most up to date information about each topic. To build community involvement on the ground, the One Step Campaign has established “working groups” in neighborhoods across the city to meet once a month and discuss each topic. At the end of the campaign, OPEN will synthesize the recommendations of working groups into a succinct vision for public education in New Orleans.
