It’s our 4th annual convening, and we are counting on you to BE THE CHANGE in demanding excellence and equity for all students in New Orleans public schools!This event will mobilize educators, students, parents and citizens into direct action on education issues. Our annual convenings are dynamic events that bring together innovative community voices in a dialogue for the future of public schools in New Orleans.

This event is free and open to the public, and refreshments and child care will be provided.The convening will feature interactive activities, panels and breakout sessions from experts in the field, multidisciplinary takes on the issues, and the chance for the public to have a say in public education. The featured topics will be:

• TEACHER QUALITY: WHY TFA ALONE WON’T DO
• SHOW ME THE MONEY! PUBLIC SCHOOL FUNDING
• LITTLE SCHOOL AT RISK — ARE NEW ORLEANS CHILDREN KINDERGARTEN-READY?
• RESTORATIVE JUSTICE: THE CRISIS OF THE BLACK MALE
• HIGH SCHOOL GRADUATION AND COLLEGE REQUIREMENTS

Every citizen of New Orleans has a stake in how our children are educated: this is your chance to expand your knowledge, engage the issues, and amplify your voice in the conversation. Join us on September 28th at Coghill Elementary to BE THE CHANGE that New Orleans schools and students deserve.

September 21st – 60 volunteers needed
Pre-Event Neighborhood Canvassing Campaigning: Arrive at OPEN’s office at 10:00a.m.

September 28th (Day of 2013 Convening) - 50 volunteers needed: Arrive at: Mary Coghill Elementary 4617 Mirabeau Ave, 9:00a.m- 4:00p.m.) Volunteer support is needed in the following areas: Greeters, Day Care Watchers, Sign-in Table, Floor Supporters, Food Service Support, Time Keepers, Scribers for workshops, Ushers etc.
